Who is behind ReROLL ?
A company recently created and called PIXYUL. We’re based in Montreal.
Who founded PIXYUL ?
Julien Cuny & Louis-Pierre Pharand.
They are entertainment industry veterans having worked at Ubisoft Montreal and Electronic Arts. They worked on a wide range of franchise but most notably FAR CRY and Assassin’s Creed.
Before founding PIXYUL, Julien was Head of Content for Assassin’s Creed and Louis-Pierre was Creative Director and also Head of Ubiworkshop.
They have both experience in video game production, marketing, business development but also in animated film, comic book publishing, merchandising etc…
Why the name PIXYUL ?
PIX is short for Pixel, YUL is Montreal’s Airport Code.
How do I contact PIXYUL ?
You should find everything you want here.
What is ReROLL?
ReROLL is PIXYUL’s first game, It’s an ambitious project with an unusual approach, the game is an Online Open World Survival Action RPG, maybe we could call this an OOWSARPG ? But it’s really more a Crowdfunded Persistent Online Open World Survival Action RPG, so that would make it a CPOOWSARPG…!!! It’s probably easier if you start by watching this video and then afterward check-out this page which gives you an introduction to the Skills System, Crafting, Exploration & the Reality System Sync.
Please, take the time.
The game will have an “isometric view”. Since this term isn’t very well known, the best examples to give would be games like: Diablo, Titan Quest or Path of Exile. This is a traditional view (also called camera) for Action RPG

What’s the gameplay?
The goal is to survive and have fun in the sandbox. Everything in the game is geared toward this, to do so we’re pushing three main gameplay pillars:
It’s up to you to decide how you want to play and how you want to balance between each one in the game.
So this thing about the drones and…
Sorry to interrupt, but the answer you’re looking for is probably below in the Drone-Sourcing section.
Why not make a MMO with this gigantic world ?
It’s an awesome idea and we’ve been dreaming about this.
It may be in ReROLL’s future, who knows? But not now, it would be adding an incredibly ambitious goal on top of something already ambitious enough.
It’s important to break down and tackle challenges one after the other; in the meantime that’s one of the reason why the game is online and persistent from the start.
These are good steps toward what could be one day an MMO.
When can I start playing ?
We expect to deliver the first playable BRICK in 2016. We will need your comments and suggestions on the different alphas we will make available before the first BRICK is delivered. Giving us your feedback will have a direct impact on the quality, so the more you participate the better are our chances to deliver something memorable. Obviously a lot of parameters has to be taken into account to reach the 2016 delivery date. The amount of money we’ll be able to raise will have a direct impact on quality and production timing.
In a nut shell, BRICK 1 is a first playable part of the world (25 sq/km) which is fun to play and contain a first iteration of all the gameplay mechanics we want for the subsequent releases. The Area is Downtown Montreal.
I’ve checked the shop, you’re selling Characters ?
Yes and no, we’re selling Game Packages which includes:
– Lifetime access to all of ReROLL BRICK’s & updates for the Single Player & COOP gameplay modes.
– A character with some equipment and skills.
If you want to know more about the skills, how you learn them, etc…you should check out this page.
The more money I spend, the more equipped and skilled my character is, it sounds like a a Pay 2 Win !
ReROLL is not a Pay 2 Win for a number of reasons, chief among this: This is not a Free2Play and there is no PVP therefore there is no unfair advantages toward someone else. No one is going to “beat” you because he spent more money in the game.
Equally important, nothing is locked in the game. You can start with a Basic Character and learn any skills and become whoever you want.
Our goal is to make the game fun for all types of players and characters.
If I support you: How do I get my copy of the game ?
We will send you a link to download the game and a key when it’s ready
Will the game be available on Steam ?
Too early to say
What languages ReROLL will be available in?
The only two languages we can commit now are English and French. Depending on how much money we’re able to raise and the interest from the community we will look into other languages of course.
What are the system requirements ?
It’s too early in development to give hardware requirements. Our target is to run on old machines and to support a wide variety of hardware. We will be announcing the system requirements at a later date, so stay tuned for an announcement down the road.
Will there be a DRM ?
Not in the usual sense BUT you’ll need an internet connection to fully appreciate the game.
We know how controversial this can be for some of you but it’s at the heart of the fantasy we’re building, especially the Reality System Sync .
These gameplay mechanics are very MMO-esque and it needs data input to simulate reality.
Now we will allow you to play offline and there will be no DRM preventing you to do so but the experience will be downgraded (and potentially seriously downgraded if you can’t connect at all).
To make sure there is no ambiguity: We’re primarily building an online game. Offline capacities will be a back-up solution.
How about Mac or Linux version ?
Too early to say, sorry, we can only commit to Windows support for now. Hopefully our budget will allow us to expand.
How about other platforms (Consoles, Tablets etc…)
We need to secure first the budget for the PC version which is our starting point. If opportunities arise, be assured we will look into them.
How does that work ? It takes pictures and suddenly it’s in 3D ! It’s magic, you have nothing else to do ! OK I understand but…the entire planet ?! Seriously ? Wait…procedural ? This is supposed to be “reality” not random ! Can you elaborate ? /suspicious Okay….what else ? You’re a scam ! you said the entire planet and after few questions we’re already missing an entire continent (and one bigger than Europe !). Yes because it’s cold with a lot of snow, you don’t want to go there. What else can you tell us ? Where do you draw the line ? I live in Bodie, California. When can I expect you to start mapping my town ?
It’s called Photogrammetry. Drones are “just” a cost efficient (and utterly cool) way to get high-definition data.
We will use others means to get the most relevant data.
Not so fast….a LOT of treatments are still needed. We will probably do a making-of about that.
By the way the entire planet ?! Seriously ?
Yes, that’s the ultimate ambition but like everything very ambitious, you need to start with baby steps and make sure you have good foundations before expanding.
That’s why we’re focusing on BRICK 1 right now, we need very good gameplay pillars and features, robust tools and then we will keep pushing the envelope.
We have multiple scenarios.
To recreate the planet: you need the raw data, the capacity to compute the data, very good tools and really good procedural algorithm (oh and also a lot of money).
Not everything deserved to be scanned and some areas will never be accessible for various reasons (military bases, restricting laws…)
Well, to start…the oceans cover approximately 71% of earth surface. It doesn’t make any sense to try to accurately recreate this huge mass of water.
This is going to be procedural.
As an example: Antarctica is a continent and it’s bigger than Europe. That wouldn’t be wise to spend money trying to drone-source an ever changing surface which very few people will set the foot on.
What we’re saying is that we will take all the necessary steps and use the right tools to cover the entire planet
We will use things like a good Digital Terrain Model (maybe with theses guys).
So hopefully you get a chance to climb Mount Sidley !
Irrelevant, we’re from Montreal!
Well we’ve mentioned Antarctica but obviously we could talk about Arctic, Deserts, the Amazon forest and many others places.
The key ideas are immersion, scale, landmarks…not ultra high fidelity because…. glaciers move, forest burns, that’s the inconvenient truth.
Balance between cost efficiency and immersion. You should be able to use a map of the real place as if it was an in-game map, that’s part of the fantasy we will be building.
We can’t wait to go on scavenging hunts with you but we can’t use drones for commercial use in the US before the FAA establish rules which is planned for 2015.
That being said, BRICK 1 is Downtown Montreal.

Financially speaking who is behind ReROLL/PIXYUL right now ? Is it viable to produce ReROLL in theses conditions ? What is a Gamer Angel ? What the Gamers Angels are funding exactly? Is it risky ? Why should I take the risk now ? I can just wait and buy the game when it’s ready What kind of guarantees consumers have? Why are you saying this ?! No one will give you money ! You can expect the best from us. Also, we REALLY want to play this game… Why is ReROLL not on Kickstarter or any other crowdfunding platform?
No one beside the two founders.
No subsidy/public funding, no publisher, no investor of any kind.
Absolutely not, that’s why we need Gamers Angels. With enough leverage from the community we hope to be able to:
– Get sufficient funding to be completely autonomous (the ideal scenario)
– Get enough leverage to be in a good position to negotiate or access whatever left we might need.
It’s an expression we came up with when we were discussing about crowdfunding. We didn’t like the word “crowd”.
“Gamer Angel” is loosely inspired by “Business Angel“. If a Business Angel is motivated by Business and the will to help then a Gamer Angel is motivated by Games and the will to help.
We consider everyone who help us make ReROLL our Gamers Angels.
They’re funding the game production and most specifically (at this stage) what we call BRICK 1.
“Game production” covers a vast number of different expenses ranging from developers salaries, to travel expenses, without forgetting things like Software Licenses, etc…
Yes it is, we could fail to deliver. Game development is a complex thing and we’re trying to do things no one has done before.
It’s a very good point, the thing is if everybody behave this way, there will be no game at all. We need a critical mass of Gamers Angel so we can start investing (much) more in the project.
It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the risk and if the project deserves your attention and money.
Technically according to our Terms of Conditions: Zero
It’s simply the truth. The first thing we owe you is the truth no matter what happens with the project. We take great responsibility in asking you to become a Gamer Angel. We understand that you worked hard for your money and we take this very seriously, because taking your money is not something we take lightly. The stakes are very high for us, we have a lot to lose, if we fail and we’ve been fair, honest and professional we still might have a chance to get a job in the entertainment industry. But If we fail and everybody’s perception is we’ve been bad at managing the money and the project, it’s like the most epic fail ever. Our careers are basically over.
We may ourselves ends-up doing a Kickstarter or an indiegogo campaign. It’s not decided yet and right now our focus is on this platform.
